Van Gelder Indian Jewellery and Baroque Pearls

Saturday 27 November, 11:30 am

Van Gelder Indian Jewellery and Baroque Pearls is a company that Bernadette van Gelder created in 1980, specializing in traditional century Indian jewellery, in addion to their collection rare South Sea Baroque Pearls. The company regularly exhibits at the TEFAF, the PAN and the Fine Arts Fair in London.

From their 17th century listed building, ’t Spijkerboor in Den Bosch, Bernadette van Gelder and her two daughters Fleur and Noelle, cater for an international clientele with their collection of unique items worn by maharajahs and kings, princes and princesses. Every piece in the collection is handpicked by the Van Gelders based on quality and originality.

A new addition to their collection are the “Van Gelder Colors". Within traditional Indian jewellery, rings were not worn as we know them. They were part of hand jewellery and became very delicate and rare. Many of these “Hath Pools” or “Archer Rings” are not wearable today. As a solution to this, Fleur and Noelle van Gelder have designed an exclusive line of colourful contemporary rings and earrings.

“Beauty is not an absolute concept; you have to see it. An increasing number of people are seeing India through our eyes and feeling the attraction of these jewels.”

The DFAS Season Opener was sponsored by Bonhams of London and Amsterdam, Fine Art Auctioneers & Valuers since 1793 and the Museum Nusantara in Delft.

Mr. Simon Cottle, head of the Glass Department at Bonhams, London, gave a fascinating lecture, entitled "Taking the Lead: The Art of 17th and 18th century Dutch and English Glass." He revealed a lively exchange of talent between England and Holland in glass production and decoration. Mr. Cottle is also Director of the UK Board of Bonhams, Director of European Business Development, and a NADFAS lecturer.

After the lecture the audience received complimentary catalogues from Bonhams and adjourned to the café and shop area of the museum for refreshments. Many participants also attended the nearby Oude Kunst en Antiekbeurs (Fine Art and Antiques Faire) in the Prinsenhof Museum in Delft, returning after 18 years absence.
