Film Evening, "Lucian Freud, Portraits"

Film eveningMay 21st

For our season closure, DFAS members had a lovely film evening, featuring “Lucian Freud, Portraits.” The film coincided with the Lucian Freud exhibit in the Gemeente Museum in The Hague at that time.

Mr. and Mrs. L. Maaldrink graciously hosted this evening at their home in The Hague. Wine and
hors-d’oeuvres were served and the perfect weather contributed to a convivial atmosphere.

Judith Wade Lecture

22nd April

Judith Wade lecture 2008The DFAS of The Hague's annual Judith Wade Lecture for 2008 was given by our patron, the British Ambassador, Mr. Lyn Parker. He spoke about Sir Edward Elgar and his place in English music. Mr Parker, who himself considered becoming a professional musician, discussed Elgar's background and early work as well as his later more famous compositions. The talk was illustrated with historical recordings and Mr. Parker himself played the piano. Those attending gathered before the lecture for tea and coffee then enjoyed a glass of wine or water after the lecture.

Visit to the Kabinet Der Koningin

16 April, 2008

A small group of DFAS members visited The Queen’s Office, the Kabinet Der Koningin, during the evening.

The Queen’s Office provides support to the Queen in the performance of her constitutional duties and acts as a link between the Queen and her ministers. The historic mansion which is home to the Queen’s Office, has a rich history and is the only façade on the street which still has seventeenth-century elements.

Deputy Director, Dr. R.W. Zaagman led a tour of the bel-étage and discussed the function of the office, the history, and pointed out some of the antiques and works of art. After the tour, the group went to the nearby British Club for refreshments and to discuss what they enjoyed on the tour.

Members of DFAS The Hague enjoyed a lovely day at TEFAF, The European Fine Arts Fair, in Maastricht. This year members of DFAS The Hague were joined by member of ADFAS of Antwerp.

AXA Art offered a superb package for the day again this year.

In the afternoon, we assembled at the AXA Art lounge for coffee.

AXA Art art historians Mr. Mathieu Brekelmans and Alexander Moretus gave us a tour of the fair which included a general overview and an appreciation of the large variety of treasures to be seen. Some of the highlights included both vary rare old masters and more modern works such as a van Gogh and a very modern 'video'.

On conclusion of the tour, we returned to the AXA Art lounge, where wine, water and juice were served. Each participant was then given a ticket to collect the catalogue for the fair near the exit, which precluded toting the heavy book around the fair for the day.

Dutch Portraits: The Age of Rembrandt and Frans Hals

November 13th, 19.30, 2007

DFAS members and friends are invited to an introductory lecture on the exhibit, "Dutch portraits: The Age of Rembrandt and Frans Hals", which is presently at the Mauritshuis in The Hague. Sixty magnificent, touching, original, surprising, proud and imposing portraits are on show in this special exhibit which really does put the Dutch on show. 17th century Dutch portraiture is a remarkable phenomenon. Never before had so many portraits been painted. To this very day, they afford insight into the taste, fashion, occupations and ambitions of affluent 17th century individuals. Rembrandt's Portrait of Jan Six, considered the best example of this master, will be part of this exhibit. Still owned by the Six family, this is the first time the portrait has been on display in 50 years.

The lecture will given by Jane Choy, a docent in the Mauritshuis, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. Maaldrink. The fee will be 10 euros for members and 12.50 for non -members.
